Many individuals are emptied from a building in Melbourne over fear of explosion following an enormous gas spill

Dozens of people have been evacuated from a building over fears it could explode following a major gas leak.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters were called to Valley Street in Melbourne at around 7.45am after an excavator burst a gas pipe.

A number of residents and workers in the vicinity were evacuated as firefighters used water to disperse the gas.

The power has since been isolated and MFB crews are using air monitoring equipment to assess air quality.

The MFB say the incident is under control.

The gas leak has forced the closure of several streets in the area of Oakleigh South.
