The previous evening, Nigerian Afrobeat artist, Seun Kuti lost in his first endeavor to win a Grammy grant in the wake of being assigned in the best world music collection classification.

Seun Kuti who was named close by Bombino (Deran), Fatoumata Diawara (Fenfo), Soweto Gospel Choir (Freedom) and Yiddish Glory (The Lost Songs of World War II) for Best World Music Album lost the honor to South Africa's Soweto Gospel Choir who won their third Grammy grant, making them the best African gathering in the honor's history.

Seun's senior sibling, Femi Kuti has been assigned for the Grammys multiple times, yet neglected to win in 2003, 2010, 2012 and in 2014.
